Bartholomew

I called him Mew, which annoyed him, so I kept doing it.

Every day he’d head out of the village and into the forest, and I’d follow, asking him where he was going, what he was doing, what’s in the bag. And every day he’d tell me it was men’s business, not for little girls to know, and then he’d stop until I walked back to the village.

But each day, he’d let me follow one more step before turning me back.

Eventually he let me follow him past where you could still see the village.

Then he did it.
