Dawn Frost

The air was heavy with frost, but also with anticipation.

Her approach was silent, like a shadow, and yet I could track every movement, every hidden breath, every momentary pause as she regained her bearings.

Eventually she emerged into my clearing, forgoing any attempt at remaining hidden. I nodded, ever so slightly to her, still sitting in my preferred relaxation squat.

“You know why I’m here.”

The tone was warm, a stark contrast to the air, and to her purpose.

I sighed and rose to my feet.

She thrust forward with her blade.

I countered, and killed my only daughter.
